The real game changer

According to proposed regulations, any import can be considered a “risk of damage”, which can result in import duties. It’s like in the movie “Minority Report” (2002) with Tom Cruise, where people were convicted of crimes they didn’t commit based on a prediction that came true with 100% accuracy.

Eurocommisson`s bearish game

The market and we also had inflated expectations from tightening the Safeguard system. After the draft of the amendments was released, we could assume that the Commission would use other instruments to protect the market, such as anti-dumping duties. This could be logical, given the subjectivity and closed nature of AD investigations.

Iron ore and scrap prices in 2025: in search of parity

Scrap could compete with iron ore to some extent, but the current price ratio between iron ore and scrap does not allow Turkish producers (the main consumers of scrap in the world) to be competitive. Turkey’s steel production remains at the level of the previous year, while domestic consumption is growing due to imports. Given the high interest rates designed to curb inflation, Turkey will see stagnation in domestic steel demand.

Ukraine can help European steel industry decarbonize

Ukraine is well suited to host DRI projects. Our country has one of the world’s largest reserves of magnetite ore, which can be enriched to provide 68-70% iron content. Such raw materials will be in demand, given the existing plans to build DRI plants in the EU.

Overcoming CBAM challenges for Ukraine and the EU

In general, the quality of information on carbon emissions contained in the first reports is very uneven. Few companies were able to provide information on actual CO2 emissions. Some companies provided the information they had on their carbon footprint, the methodology for calculating which did not comply with the methodology prescribed in the СВАМ regulations.
